Lake Superior Tour: Thunder Bay to Bayfield, WI

As our change of plans, we decided to tour Lake Superior, a roughly 1450 mile route with beautiful stretches of road and scenery. We awoke in Thunder Bay to a huge storm cell embarking on our area, so we opted for a later check out and headed out after the rain around 1130am.

IMG_1201.JPG
We were headed south on 61 towards the border, and headed for a short sight seeing detour down Sturgeon Bay Road toward Mink Mountain as the fog lifted.

We headed toward Grand Marais, MN, who knew Minnesota was such a beautiful state?? We stopped at the Grand Portage State Park for a little walk and some history about how important this port was for trade between the fur traders and those from the colonies through the Great Lakes.

Lake Superior Tour: Sault Ste Marie to Wawa

We started the day touring the Soo Locks. The locks navigate a 21 foot drop from Lake Superior to Lake Huron via the 63 mile long St Mary’s River. We were able to watch them raise a small passenger boat, and witnessed a large freighter enter the locks as well.

IMG_1062.JPG

IMG_1065.JPG

IMG_1069.JPG

IMG_1078.JPG
We headed over the bridge to Sault Ste Marie, ON toward highway 17 west (TransCanada) to explore the north shores of Lake Superior. As soon as you cross, the first thing you notice is the sheer ruggedness of the land, the rocks and the smell of pine. Lakes abound, so many that you see names like Mom Lake and Dad Lake. Before we got too far, we stopped for a break at a roadside craft and general store where a fellow motorcyclist suggested we stay in Wawa instead of Marathon as we had planned. Road trip rule: be flexible.

It was getting cold and we were chilled from the rain when we got to Wawa. It is best known for the Canada Goose they built to lure people to their town off the expressway. The goose that lures you in is not the original goose, but a gift from a mining company..

IMG_1117.JPG
The original goose is repaired and sits next to the general store..

IMG_1118.JPG
And a third goose is on top of the Wawa Motor Inn where we stayed the night…

IMG_1127.JPG
Also on display near the original goose is a inuksuk sculpture, which are all over the route piled on top of rocks.

IMG_1119.JPG
We had a great room in the log village of the Wawa Motor Inn..

IMG_1130.JPG

IMG_1129.JPG
The motel had a great restaurant where we had Salisbury steak and a club sandwich, followed by dessert after a stroll across the road to the general store and coffee at Tim Hortons. Tore it up in Wawa….Jef and Margi

A Little Rain Never Hurt Anyone

We had a nice relaxing morning visiting with Uncle Bob and Aunt Pam enjoying their beautiful home.
Around 2:00 we headed toward Munising along the scenic route of M31. The weather was calling for scattered rain showers but we were hopeful on dodging the rain drops. Gorgeous scenes along the route.

Getting Used to the Bike

It’s been a long year since the last big adventure to Cape Breton. We headed out after our packing, errands and work around 2:00. The weather was partly cloudy, and a little breeze to make the riding comfortable with coats and gear. We traveled 69 to 94 until we got off the highway for gas in Galesburg. The sky was getting blacker and people at the gas station remarked “hope you are going East”. We started off as it began to rain lightly and stopped under an overpass to let the weather go past us.

20140830-083933-31173156.jpg
When it looked like it was going to last, we geared up in rainsuits and headed off.

Despite the rain, the ride on M 37 was so pretty toward Traverse City.
