Lake Superior Tour: Wawa to Thunder Bay

We woke up to the soothing sounds of raindrops outside our window, so we waited out the rain as we drank our coffee..

Once the cell passed, we stopped at Tim Hortons for a quick bite to eat, then on the road. Gorgeous scenery throughout the day…

Lake Superior Tour: Sault Ste Marie to Wawa

We started the day touring the Soo Locks. The locks navigate a 21 foot drop from Lake Superior to Lake Huron via the 63 mile long St Mary’s River. We were able to watch them raise a small passenger boat, and witnessed a large freighter enter the locks as well.

We headed over the bridge to Sault Ste Marie, ON toward highway 17 west (TransCanada) to explore the north shores of Lake Superior. As soon as you cross, the first thing you notice is the sheer ruggedness of the land, the rocks and the smell of pine. Lakes abound, so many that you see names like Mom Lake and Dad Lake. Before we got too far, we stopped for a break at a roadside craft and general store where a fellow motorcyclist suggested we stay in Wawa instead of Marathon as we had planned. Road trip rule: be flexible.

It was getting cold and we were chilled from the rain when we got to Wawa. It is best known for the Canada Goose they built to lure people to their town off the expressway. The goose that lures you in is not the original goose, but a gift from a mining company..

IMG_1117.JPG
The original goose is repaired and sits next to the general store..

IMG_1118.JPG
And a third goose is on top of the Wawa Motor Inn where we stayed the night…

IMG_1127.JPG
Also on display near the original goose is a inuksuk sculpture, which are all over the route piled on top of rocks.

IMG_1119.JPG
We had a great room in the log village of the Wawa Motor Inn..

IMG_1129.JPG
The motel had a great restaurant where we had Salisbury steak and a club sandwich, followed by dessert after a stroll across the road to the general store and coffee at Tim Hortons. Tore it up in Wawa….Jef and Margi
